THE ICHTHYOSAUR GRAVEYARD IN TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK is one of the world's most significant fossil finds of marine reptiles from the Cretaceous period, according to the team of glaciologist who discovered it in 2004. The site, probably exposed just recently as the Patagonian Ice Field receded, contains many nearly fully preserved ichthyosaur skeletons as well as numerous other fossils. Come have a look!

Itinerary

DAY 1: Grey - Pingo - Zapata

Night in Camping Zapata
A transfer will pick you up in the early morning from your accommodation in Puerto Natales to get to the western entrance of Torres del Paine National Park. We will start our hike in a valley bordering the Pingo river until we enter the rain forest. Many interesting species find shelter in this forest which is one of the last forests of the park that has not been affected by fires. 15km of very muddy grounds and a beautiful waterfall later, we reach Zapata campsite, which will be our base camp for the following days.

DAY 2: Ichthyosaur Hunt

Night in Camping Zapata
This day, we leave in the early morning with a day pack on the hunt for the ichthysaur fossil. Spread over some distance flanking the lateral moraine of receding Patagonian Southern Ice Fields, the ichthyosaur graveyard awaits us.

**Please note that this place is only accessible under certain weather conditions and counting with a special permit from the park rangers. This is an expedition, and just like all expeditions, the chance of failure subsists.

DAY 3: Zapata - Pingo - Grey

Night in Puerto Natales
Breaking camp in the early morning to undertake the way back to civilization. 15 km hike and 2 hours drive later, we will be back in Puerto Natales.

Distance: 15 km (9 miles)
Elevation Loss: 550 m (1,800 ft)
Difficulty: medium
